It was about 5 pm on a Thursday and despite the fact that we were assured a dry and fresh afternoon, it hadn't given up on raining! Brian and me were resting commenting on the footy, waiting around for the seventh call for the day to come in. Inevitably we had the call from a lovely women on a business excursion who had gone to the Esso petrol station in Streetlam and filled petrol in her diesel father's BMW 550 hire car by mistake. She was very troubled by the sounds of it, saying "I just can't believe that I have messed up the vehicle! I'm so familiar with filling my petrol car that I had forgot I was driving a diesel!" We told her to take it easy and not to be concerned, plus that things like this sadly happen. She managed to move the car to a protected position and, seeing as it was just a few minutes from where we were, we were able to find the lady quickly. The contaminated fuel was removed so she was able to go home to the hotel she was lodging in. Although we got very drenched, it was all worth the time seeing her drive home relaxed and not so anxious. A job in North Yorkshire well done in my opinion!

The 3 things you MUST know about petrol in diesel!

Water Contamination or AdBlue Contamination

Water contaminated fuel, no matter whether it is unleaded petrol or diesel, is undoubtedly a serious situation to deal with in a car - especially in present-day common-rail engines.

Having water or AdBlue in petrol or diesel can certainly result in idling difficulties, lumpy running, increased smoke and, if not dealt with properly, possibly broken injectors. Water in petrol is easier to remove as compared to water in diesel - primarily because diesel is an oil. Nevertheless we are able to handle both situations quite expediently.

Remember that as long as the vehicle has been run with the water contaminated fuel it will most likely require a new fuel filter fitted because the old one will be thoroughly wet and ineffective.

Marine Fuel Drains

If it turns out there is the incorrect fuel, or perhaps contaminated fuel (most usually water contamination or degraded fuel) in a boat we can certainly help clean it out. Providing the boat is either dry-docked, or parked close enough to parking spot we are able to access the storage tanks and drain out the fuel. We've undertaken quite a few fuel drains at docks and boatyards in the uk.

Wrong Fuel in Car in DL7 Postcode - Streetlam Misfueling

The owner of a clean white Mazda Navajo was regretful that he put unleaded in his diesel automobile when he got as far as the street and it spluttered and stopped. "I've gone and put unleaded in my diesel vehicle," is what he shared with us the first time he phoned. In truth, when he initially called us he said he would like to research prices, but he phoned us back soon enough because our price and call-out times were the most appropriate. Obviously, our technician had him again doing his deliveries well within the time we had quoted.

All of our technicians are experienced on the newest automobiles and their fuel systems. We do over 4,000 contaminated fuel removals yearly in the UK (indeed, there are that many customers who also make the mistake - you are certainly not the only person). Our phone lines are open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Our technical engineers are available when ever you need them.

A couple of days ago a young man contacted us when his shiny Peugeot Partner stopped in the middle of a street in Streetlam. He had mistakenly put petrol in the diesel motor and managed to get to the road before needing to stop. It was still early in the day and our technician, who lives nearby, arrived with him in about fifteen minutes. We managed to get rid of the wrong fuel and put fresh diesel yet again in the vehicle. "Genuine thanks to you for your fast response, especially at 6 a.m., I really appreciate it."

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VA receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
